When Can My Child Begin First Communion Preparation?

Children may begin their First Year of Preparation before reaching the age of reason. However, the celebration of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion normally takes place after a child has reached the age of reason (around age 7) and completed the required preparation.

Because Family Faith Formation follows a flexible pathway, the exact timeline will vary from child to child.

Important Note

Sacramental preparation is not a race. Children progress at different rates, and readiness is determined through a partnership between parents, the child, the Sacramental Preparation Coordinator, and the parish. Families are encouraged to focus on growing in faith rather than reaching a particular date.
