Weekend Masses

Weekend Masses

Winter and summer, there are four masses each weekend at St. Barbara Church. Every effort is made to be sure that the masses are prayerful, reverent and yet filled with hope and joy. The scripture texts are always the focus of the homily, never being set aside for money talks, mission promotions and so forth. These other items, necessary as they are, are handled in the widely read Bulletin.

Each mass has its own distinct feeling. The 5:30pm Saturday vigil mass tends to be contemplative and charismatic at the same time. At 7:30am on Sunday morning the mood is one that is open to the day yet retains an air of quietness. During most of the winter months an adult choir helps create a mood of elevated dignity at the 9:00 am liturgy, while the 10:30am mass is almost electric with enthusiasm. This final joyous mass for each Sunday is normally quite crowded.

Guests at St. Barbara Church comment on the large number of teens and children who participate in the various masses. These young Catholics frequently invite their peers to mass because they are obviously proud of their parish and want their friends to experience the special "St. Barbara feeling." Because the weekend masses are so prayerful many visitors like to come, especially on Sunday morning, and participate in the liturgy. These welcome guests, to a person, leave the various masses filled with enthusiasm and joy.
